Levels of purpose for websites

Date: Thu Nov 08 2007
People tend to overly focus on THE purpose for something, when there can easily be a range of purposes. M. Scott Peck called this overdeterminism.

For everything there are multiple levels of purpose. You have physical purpose, emotional, mental (logic, reasoning), symbolic, and spiritual reasons for doing anything you do. Not all of this is necessarily visible to you. If you've studied any psychology you know about the vast subterranean reaches of the subconscious mind.

In my experience, the more you know of the range of purpose to your actions, the more complete your actions can be. Here's an example of what I mean:

PhysicalEarn money so that I may live independantly of having to work for a corporation. So that I can travel more. So that I can have flexibility over where I live.
EmotionalI want to be able to speak.
MentalI have things to say, ideas to present, information that I think the world doesn't grasp, and an important story buried in the information.
SymbolicI seek to save my people. I am the savior.
SpiritualI seek to align myself with divine will.

You may desire to explore the higher purpose. Or you may not. It is up to you, really. I'm just presenting this model because I think it's important.
